Valerie Shelters, principal of Northwest Elementary School in Blackman Township, says trash and written obscenities have been a chronic problem in the girls' bathroom. But she says she didn't know two staffers had mounted a dummy surveillance camera in a high corner on Monday. Shelters says the staffers aimed the camera at the sinks and toilet stall doors in an effort to give girls the impression they were being filmed.

We are all in the same foundering boat, the engine is labouring, but instead of all hands on deck, the bridge and state cabins are crowded with those who believe they are entitled to a luxury cruise. The man who plans to build a micro-sprint racetrack on his family's Neupert Road farm said Thursday he would appeal a decision requiring him to construct public restrooms as one of the mandates for making the development happen. "I don't have a choice," Brett Neupert of Harrisville said after last night's planning commission meeting. Commission members, who took no formal action, told Neupert that a fully functioning restroom facility would be needed.

Yesterday, November 19, was celebrated globally as the World Toilet Day, a day set aside for the creation of platforms to raise awareness about the need to appreciate the problems of inadequate sanitation facilities including household toilets. In Ghana the theme for the World Toilet Day was "Stop open defecation, Use the Toilets" and to mark the day school children from Nima Cluster of schools symbolically queued with prominent officials for their turn to visit the toilet. The World Toilet Organization declared November 19 as World Toilet Day when the organization, committed to improving toilet and sanitation conditions world wide, was founded in 2001. Vanderbilt University used World Toilet Day to remind people to save water. Vanderbilt is using innovative technology on campus to save money and natural resources.

While everybody was 'harping' on the significance of hygiene on World Toilet Day, Harpic today notched a world record for the longest queue outside a toilet. The record, which came in association with Sulabh, saw 861 people come lining up outside a toilet, Reckitt Benckiser India Limited said in a press statement issued here. The attempt started at 1000 hrs at Ryan International School and hundreds joined in as a team from Harpic and Sulabh urged people to support it.

A report released by the Joint Monitoring Platform, a research organization, for 2008, indicates that only 11 per cent of Ghanaians have access to improved latrine. Improved latrines are those that confine faeces safely, separate them from human contact and are not open to flies. The report indicates that 51 per cent of Ghanaians use shared latrines or public toilets, which are usually not accepted as improved facilities.

Water and sanitation services in the Liberian capital, Monrovia, are getting worse as a growing urban population tries to squeeze more out of already skeletal services. On 19 November, World Toilet Day, NGOs are calling on the government to up its allocation, and on international donors to reprioritize funding to stamp out cholera and cut child mortality. Just one-third of Monrovia's 1.5 million residents have access to clean toilets, and 20 to 30 cholera cases are reported weekly; in 2008 there were 88
